Genomics and Public Service Fellowship Program

In 2023, In 2023, the American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG) and the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) announced a new partnership that strengthens and substantially expands our joint genomics fellowship programs.

The new Genomics and Public Service Program recognizes the importance of diverse career paths to inform and advance genomic knowledge and application. It will provide training and career development in public policy, education and engagement, science communication, and public administration of science. Opportunities are available for individuals at the graduate level and postbaccalaureate level.

Post-Graduate Fellowships

ASHG-NHGRI post-graduate fellowship programs provide fellows with experience working within NHGRI, ASHG, and a third organization informed by the fellow’s preference and anticipated career path.

The Genetics and Public Policy Fellowship is for individuals interested in the development and implementation of genetics-related health and research policies at a national level.

The Genetics Education and Engagement Fellowship is for individuals interested in developing and implementing genetic and genomic education, community engagement, and/or professional development initiatives for diverse K-12, undergraduate, graduate, post-graduate, professional or public audiences.

The Genomics Communications Fellowship is for individuals who are interested in the development, coordination, and implementation of innovative, newsworthy public health communications products to help people learn about genomics and its role in our lives.

• Fellowship Duration: Two years, starting in July.
• Applications: Applications open in fall and will be open every other year.
• Eligibility: Applicants must have completed graduate education, including either an academic (e.g., PhD or master’s degree) or professional degree (e.g., MD, JD, etc.) and be eligible to work in the United States.
• Compensation and Benefits: Annual $79,000 salary plus benefits including medical, dental, and vision insurance; retirement plan matching; and a training/travel allowance.

Post-Baccalaureate Fellowship

The Post-Baccalaureate Genomics Analyst Fellowship is for recent undergraduates to gain exposure to and training in multiple career paths that advance public service for human genetics and genomics. Fellows will work either with NHGRI in the extramural research program or with ASHG exploring the variety of work that ASHG does to advance genetics and genomics research, literacy, public policy, and workforce development. The fellowship is ideal for applicants seeking a two-year appointment prior to enrolling in graduate or professional school.

• Fellowship Duration: Two years, starting in July.
• Applications: Applications open each fall.
• Eligibility: Applicants must have recently (within 3 years) earned a BA or BS in the biological sciences or a closely related field and be eligible to work in the United States.
• Compensation and Benefits: Annual $44,500 salary plus benefits including medical, dental, and vision insurance; retirement plan matching; and a training/travel allowance.
