ASHG Launches Impact Partnerships for Equity in Genetics and Genomics Research

hand shakeAs part of its sustained and growing commitment to realize a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive future, ASHG has launched the Genetics and Genomics Impact Partnerships program this January to strengthen partnerships with like-minded organizations sharing these goals

Illumina, a leader in next-generation genomic sequencing technologies, and Invitae, a leading medical genetics company, have joined as founding partners. As a recognized leader in human genetics and genomics, ASHG is uniquely positioned to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in human genetics and genomics research on a global scale. With the support of new Impact Partners, the Society will continue to grow and expand its diversity, equity, and inclusion programs to bring the genetics and genomics research community the best results in the field.

“The Society is committed to expanding and maintaining member engagement and leadership opportunities that reflect the diversity of the field, and centers diversity and equity of research participation in genetics and genomics at large,” said Neil Hanchard, MD, PhD, ASHG’s Chair of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Task Force. “This is essential as our member community continues to expand and as ASHG continues to strengthen its position as a leader in valuing, driving, and embodying diversity in the field. The support of our Impact Partners allows the Society to design programs with demonstrable impacts, expanded capacity of efforts, and sustaining and creating programs related to diversity, equity and inclusion.”

Collective effort is imperative for the human genetics and genomics research field to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion on a global scale. ASHG is working strategically and programmatically to support the careers of researchers from diverse backgrounds, sustain emphasis on increasing diversity and inclusion in research cohorts, and develop a sophisticated knowledge network for researchers.

ASHG and Impact Partners will meet periodically to exchange knowledge and experiences about DEI strategies that institutions and researchers can implement to advance DEI in workforce development and research participation.

“We remain focused on fostering enduring change in the human genetics and genomic field and our newest partnership with Illumina and Invitae will further that effort,” ASHG President Charles Rotimi, PhD said. “Recruiting, retaining and engaging a robustly diverse and inclusive human genetics community is essential to identifying and addressing the profound questions in human genetics and advancing health equity, and everyone has a role to play in this critical mission.”
