The ASHG 2023 Annual Meeting features several events and opportunities of special interest to trainees and those seeking to advance their career.

Mentoring and Networking

Once on site, trainees can network with peers and connect with different career development committee members. In addition, the Trainee Social Reception, scheduled on Wednesday, November 1st, provides an opportunity to network and get advice from potential mentors at different career stages.

Trainees networking at ASHG 2022 Networking reception

“Behind-the-Scenes: ASHG Publications Workshop”, taking place on Saturday, November 4^th , will provide you with information to help navigate the scientific publication process. Editors from multiple journals, including AJHG and HGG Advances, will give you a behind-the-scenes view of scientific publishing, covering topics such as data sharing, open access publication, and the ins and outs of the peer review process. There will be plenty of time for questions and networking. This session is geared towards trainees and junior faculty who are relatively new to publishing.

Scientific Skill-Building

Every year, ASHG offers a slate of interactive workshops designed to help attendees master new software, work through analyses, and share their expertise. This year’s workshops include:

The Michigan Imputation Server: Data Preparation, Genotype Imputation, and Data Analysis Wednesday, November 1: 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm Pricing: $35 ASHG member, $50 nonmember. Focus on Diversity

To help build a culturally diverse genetics workforce, the ASHG Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Reception will take place, Thursday, November 2^nd, and a luncheon will take place that same day at 12:15pm-1:45pm. Both ticketed events aim to mentor trainees from underrepresented minority groups and share information on training and career opportunities in genetics and genomics.

Be Aware of Scams for Housing and Attendee Lists

Be alert! ASHG members and meeting attendees are being approached by companies or visiting websites that falsely claim to be official ASHG hotel partners or offer “the best rates.” Many of these are scams. We strongly suggest you book using the hotel links provided on ASHG’s website or another reputable and known travel website. Members and exhibitors have reported lost reservations and unrecoverable expenses from such scams and fake sites. Please pay careful attention when booking, and we look forward to welcoming you to Washington D.C.

Another common scam is an offer of the official attendee email list for ASHG 2023. ASHG does not sell, rent, or share contact/lead lists of members or meeting attendees. None of these companies are legitimate. Please reach out to exhibits@ashg.org for advertising and sponsorship options to reach ASHG meeting attendees and to report suspicious contacts.
